We were absolutely delighted recently to welcome Rashmii Sharma, a sustainability writer and student journalist from the Strathclyde Telegraph, into the salon.

She sat down with Salon Director, Louise, to dig a little deeper into what makes Hair In The City tick. We know that "sustainability" is a buzzword that gets thrown around a lot these days, so it was refreshing to have an honest chat about the real, practical steps we are taking right here on High Street to lower our impact on the planet—without ever compromising the quality of your hair.

Rashmii wrote a fantastic piece titled "Cutting Carbon, Not Just Hair," and seeing our salon ethos in print (and online!) was a real proud moment for the whole team.

If you haven’t had a chance to read the full article yet, we wanted to share our favourite takeaways.

5 Ways Your Appointment is Helping the Planet (According to the Telegraph)

The article highlighted that hair salons can be surprisingly resource-intensive, but small changes add up to a massive difference. Here is what Rashmii found when she looked behind the scenes at HITC:

1. The Taps Are Magic 💧 We swapped out old fittings for Ecoheads taps. The article notes that these slash water and energy use by up to 65%. The best bit? They actually increase water pressure, giving you a better scalp massage while saving water.

2. The Towels Disappear 🌱 We said goodbye to cotton towels (which require high-energy laundering and chemical detergents) and replaced them with Scrummi towels. Rashmii highlighted that these are biodegradable and break down naturally in around 100 days.

3. The Furniture Has a Story 🪑 Instead of buying brand new, much of our furniture and fittings were sourced second-hand from Glasgow Wood Recycling. It looks great, gives reclaimed materials a new life, and supports the local circular economy.

4. Sustainability Include People, Too 🤍 We loved that the article picked up on our private styling space. Rashmii described this as "sustainability of wellbeing"—creating a quieter environment for anyone with anxiety or sensory needs. True sustainability is about looking after people just as much as the planet.

5. Luxury Without Compromise ✨ As Louise told the Telegraph: "A big misconception is that sustainable means substandard... That's just not true. Our towels work better. Our water system feels better. The products are premium.".

We are so proud to be part of a movement that proves you don't have to choose between the planet and gorgeous hair.

A huge thank you to Rashmii and the Strathclyde Telegraph for stopping by and sharing our story.
