Traditional highlights are beautiful, but they come with a catch: the dreaded "foil line" regrowth. Because foils are woven right to the scalp, you are locked into a strict root touch-up cycle every six to eight weeks. If you are looking for a softer, more modern look that grows out beautifully without harsh root lines, transitioning to a lived-in balayage is the perfect solution.

Transitioning from traditional foils to a hand-painted balayage is one of our most popular requests at Hair In The City Glasgow. It gives you that bright, dimensional blonde look while extending your salon visits to 12, 16, or even 20 weeks.

How We Manage the Transition

We don't simply stop foiling and let your roots grow out. Transitioning requires a strategic approach to blend your existing highlights into a seamless, hand-painted sweep of colour:

  1. The Root Melt or Shadow Root: We apply a demi-permanent colour matching your natural base shade at the roots, smudging it down to blur the start of your highlights. This removes the harsh growth line.

  2. Bespoke Balayage Painting: Our colour specialists hand-paint lighter dimensions through the mid-lengths and ends. This technique, known as "tip-outs" or "foilayage," adds soft, natural brightness that blends perfectly with your base.

  3. Bespoke Toning: We finish with a Keune Semi Color melt to harmonise your old foils and new balayage into a seamless, glossy, and natural gradient.

The Benefits of Lived-In Blonde

  • Low Maintenance: You only need to touch up your balayage twice a year, saving you time and keeping your hair healthier by reducing chemical processing.

  • Natural Softness: The hand-painted sweeps mimic natural, sun-kissed hair, ensuring a flattering look that grows out with zero harsh lines.

  • Custom Placement: Every balayage is customized by your stylist to suit your haircut, face shape, and natural movement.
