Protective hairstyles are SUPER beneficial for your hair's health and growth. Two factors impact hair health and growth.
The first hair growth factor starts with your scalp and how active the follicles are. Specifically, how long your hair stays in the growth phase. The active growth phase describes when the hair follicle takes on its onion-like shape and works to produce the hair fiber. Make sure to read our blog post on scalp care to better understand your scalp needs.
The second factor when it comes to growing long hair is length retention. This means keeping the hair strands you already have grown out of your head from breaking. Both factors are important to ensuring hair health and growth.
Wearing the hair up in styles where the hair ends are tucked away is the best way to protect the mid-lengths to ends, as it is protected from the surrounding environment such as indoor heating or air conditioning that can dry out the hair, as well as friction. When the ends of hair, which are most likely to dry out, are tucked away and not exposed to as much air, they can retain moisture for longer.
You should also consider protective hairstyles for sleep as breakage can be caused by tangling, breaking, friction, and, frizzing. Especially when your hair rubs against your pillowcase. Stuck on what protective hairstyles are right for you? We’ve got you covered.
Plait

A plait is a simple hairstyle formed by interlacing three or more strands of hair.
Braiding/ plaiting your hair can help retain its length by protecting the scalp and ends. When your hair is in plaits, you don’t brush or detangle your hair, which is a common cause of hair breakage.
When your ends are tucked away, it can minimize the likelihood of split ends and unwanted breakage. Plus, braided styles do a good job of locking in the hydration - a must-have for hair health and growth.

Top Knot
A top knot is a stylish hairstyle made by winding your hair in a bun on the top of your head. It's versatile and can range from sleek and sophisticated to messy chic.
This hairstyle keeps your hair off your shoulders and back, reducing friction and minimizing the risk of breakage.

French/ Dutch Braids
Another variation of a plait is the French and Dutch braid which includes 2 plaits from the front of the scalp to the hair end.
The main difference is that you're crossing sections of hair over one another with a French braid, and you'll be crossing them underneath with a Dutch braid.

Sleep Cap
Specifically for combatting breakage when sleeping, satin sleep caps can be a savior for your hair.
There are varying sizes and styles of hair caps for varying hair types that can protect your hair from friction against your pillows while asleep.
Using a satin sleep cap is soft and gentle on your hair and can help lock in moisture and prevent hair products from being absorbed by the pillow, benefiting all hair types.
